TODAY is Vesak or Buddha Day in Singapore. The most important of the Buddhist festivals celebrates the Buddha’s birthday, and, for some Buddhists, also marks his enlightenment and death. It’s celebration varies from year to year because the date is determined by the lunar calendar. Here are some quotations by Siddhartha better known as Buddha (Enlightened One).
Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal
with the intent of throwing it at someone else;
you are the one who gets burned.
However many holy words you read, however many you speak,
what good will they do you if you do not act on upon them?
Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle,
and the life of the candle will not be shortened.
Happiness never decreases by being shared.
The secret of health for
both mind and body is not to
mourn for the past,
worry about the future,
or anticipate troubles,
but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.
Your work is to discover your work
And then with all your heart
To give yourself to it.
